Roof Maintenance and Repairs: How to prevent a disaster?

•  Inspect joints and chimneys for cracked or deteriorating caulking, if so, new caulking or mortar must be applied to prevent roof leaking.
•  Inspect the flashing, if the flashing is not solid you must remove all of the old caulk, scrub the area clean and re-seal.
•  Look for damaged, missing or curling shingles. Also look for any other signs of wear and tear. It’s sometimes easier to replace part of your shingles, or to hire Broom’s Professional local roofer’s to do it for you.
•  Inspect the roof for signs of fungus or algae. If you see moss or algae collecting, you could install zinc or lead control strips to help stop the problem.
•  Inspect the roof for Sticks, leaves and other debris because these can damage your shingles, grow algae and clog your gutters. To prevent this from happening you must sweep or blow off the excess debris and cut any trees or branches that are hanging over the roof.
•  Although Roof’s in the Ottawa / Gatineau region that are built to code should hold up to 6 feet of snow. Shoveling the snow off the roof could prevent roof collapse.
